## Who he is

Thomas Marmol works the job sites at a landscaping company in the Florida Keys:

## GroundCrew (iOS, Swift, SwiftUI, Firebase, Next.js)

Crew software for an owner of two to twelve people who is on a truck rather
than at a desk. Existing systems assume a dispatcher in an office; there is
none. One screen answers one question: does anything need me.

It does three things. It orders the route so a truck stops backtracking across
a neighbourhood. It holds the per-property checklist so what the customer pays
for is what gets done. It collects before-and-after photo proof taken at the
address, so the invoice can leave the same day.

Why the proof matters: three weeks after a job a customer says nobody came.
Without a photo taken at the address that is one person's word against
another's, and the owner loses, because the customer holds the cheque.

## Crew Talk (iOS, Swift, SwiftUI)

A live two-way voice translator for job sites, where the working language is
split. Consumer translators optimise for breadth of vocabulary; this needs the
opposite, a narrow vocabulary spoken aloud and read at arm's length in
sunlight.

The transcript is cleaned on the phone before translation, removing filler,
false starts and misheard trade words. Nothing leaves the device for that step.
The translation rule is: translate meaning not words, match the speaker's tone,
use the word the trade uses rather than the dictionary one, never round a
number.

Why spoken rather than typed: a twelve-word job sentence takes about five
seconds to say and about nineteen to type. Stanford measured speech entry at
3.0 times faster than keyboard typing for English on a smartphone, with 20.4
per cent fewer errors (Ruan et al., 2016). On a job site the hands are in
gloves and the screen is in full sun, so the real gap is not convenience, it is
whether the sentence gets said at all.

## Method

Ideas are scored before they are built: does the person feel it today, does it
come back, would they admit it out loud, would they tell someone else. About a
hundred operator case histories are kept, sorted by practice rather than by
person: fifteen or more cases is a rule, fewer than five is luck. Every entry
carries the case against it.
